The San Antonio Toxathon
TEF, in partnership with San Antonio Science (SAS), under the leadership of Travis Block, was pleased to present the San Antonio Toxathon on the evening of March 10, 2018, prior to the next day’s opening of the Society of Toxicology annual conference. Through the generosity of the city of San Antonio and its mayor, Ron Nirenberg, we were able to secure the Blue Star Brewing Company, a popular gathering spot near the River Walk, for this event, and offer a catered dinner to everyone participating.
The evening consisted of alternating brief talks presenting the basics of toxicology with tox trivia, essentially quiz game segments with questions on some of the less technical aspects of toxicology. The talks were presented by Sol Bobst of ToxSci Advisors, George Layton, of the South Texas Poison Center, and Carla Hausler of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. The tox trivia questions were addressed to the audience who divided into teams by tables. Prizes were awarded to the top teams and everyone left with a handsome Toxathon t-shirt.
The Toxathon represents one kind of event we think will be helpful in informing the public about TEF’s mission in conveying credible toxicological science in an understandable and fun, when possible, way.
